Our history

At the beginning of the 60s Nerino Mezzaluna decided to implement his business idea:
transforming and commercializing the meat of the pigs of his own domestic breeding.
It was a small family farm, this work was typically seasonal, in fact it was carried out only in the winter as in those days there were no cold cells or refrigerators necessary for the maintenance of the meat.

The animals that are slaughtered in our factory are domestically sourced from local farms in the Fermano and Maceratese areas.

The company has developed and created the project “Protection of animal welfare at the slaughterhouse, quality and meat hygiene”, in collaboration with the University of Camerino School of Biosciences e Veterinary Medicine.

FOOD HYGIENE

SALUMIFICIO MEZZALUNA works daily to ensure customer's satisfaction  through a rigorous selection of. raw material and an accurate internal production process, from choosing the meats to the packaged product.
The quality department carries out control action on all company procedures and on the conformity of products, it also makes use of an external certified analysis laboratory, equipped with modern structures and highly specialized personnel.

ANIMAL WELFARE

The Project
The Company has developed and implemented the project “Protection of animal welfare at slaughterhouses, quality and hygiene of meat”, in collaboration with the University of Camerino School of Biosciences and Veterinary medicine.
Purposes
• identification of parameters and related critical limits that can be used to evaluate the well-being of pigs during the various pre-slaughter phases;
• implementation of an HACCP plan to protect the welfare of pigs during felling and related operations;
• improvement of the organoleptic and technological quality of the meat.
• caring of animal welfare of species of zootechnical interest in all stages of the production cycle, from breeding to abbatoirs, including transport , this our concern and an integral part of all the strategic projects of the European Commission. The concept of “animal welfare” is a subject of considerable interest among consumers as well: the quality of food is not determined exclusively by the wholesomeness and hygiene of the finished product but also from the perception of the state of well-being of the animal from which the product derives,, well-being which in any case has a direct relationship to the quality and hygiene of food.
